Q&A
"Getting hurt is an important aspect of what we're doing". - Esthera Preda, Peep Show
We caught up with Esthera Preda, one of the founders of Peep Show, an all girl film collective of snowboarders based out of Big Bear, Canada. We've been following them since our 2010 film collab with the girls, Peep Show vs Quebec,... and thought we'd grab them for a quick Q&A.
B = Burn // E = Esthera Preda
B: Does the camera come out with the crew most days?
E: Yes, I would say everyday. This year we wanted to make sure we would have enough footage to work with.
From the past experience from the first movie [Peepshow, 2009 - available @ Methodmag.com / TWsnow.com ] we knew this year we would have to make some sacrifices. I think I can recall maybe 3 or 4 days out of the season where we rode just for fun. And even at that moment, I'm pretty sure we had our point-and-shoot elph cameras with us. You never know what can happen.B: How does film making influence the way you ride?
E: Film making definitely makes you more self-conscious about your riding style. It's also one of the best ways to learn. You can instantly see what you're doing wrong. Also, I would say that making snowboard movies is very inspirational; each rider has their own style and personality. It gives you a great overall view of what girls are capable of.
B: Is it tough to just hold the camera and film when one of the girls wipes out badly?
E: I guess you'd still have to get the shot and make sure to not cut it early. Usually another person helps the hurt girl and so the filmer can keep on filming the scene. Getting hurt is an important aspect of what we're doing.
B: Which movies/directors inspire your editing style?
E: June and I are really inspired by any snowboard movies that show personality, the lifestyle and the behind the scenes. In my opinion, good lifestyle is as important as having good tricks in a movie. I think this aspect of snowboarding has been well shown in Mikey Leblanc's movies. We are definitely inspired by them.
B: What goes down at a Peep Show film premier?
E: It's usually a good gathering with a lot of friends who came to support the cause. Obviously we're always a little stressed out, we want to make sure everyone is having a good time and likes the movie. Our less planned premieres were the most fun. We had a good one in Salt Lake City in the back alley of Laura Hadar's shop. June and I made a screen out of pvc tubes and white painted sheets that we hung on a brick wall.
The Peep Show crew consists of Esthera Preda, Jess Kimura, Desiree Melancon, Marie Hucal, Terra Michilot, Laura Hadar, Gabby Maiden, Celia Miller, Colleen Quigley & friends. They shoot on a Sony VX 2000, Canon 5D, Panasonic HVX200 and a Canon 514 XL Super 8. Look out for Peepshow Would you? Coming out this Fall @ http://www.peepshowfilms.com/.
